Mainland Spain vs. The Canary Islands: Why Bringing Your Car to Tenerife Isn't Completely Free
You've made the move. You drove your car from Madrid or Barcelona down to Huelva, boarded the ferry, and arrived in beautiful Tenerife. Naturally, you expect to continue driving your car here just like anywhere else in Spain.
Many people are surprised to learn, however, that you cannot keep driving a mainland-registered vehicle in the Canary Islands indefinitely. Registering it locally involves several administrative steps — and some costs.
Why? After all, both places are Spain. The answer lies in the special tax system of the Canary Islands.
1. The "Same Country" Confusion
At first glance, it seems strange. Move your car from Valencia to Seville and there are no import procedures, no customs declarations, no extra taxes. It's simply the same country.
But when a car moves from mainland Spain to Tenerife or Gran Canaria, the process becomes more complex — not because the Canary Islands are a different country, but because they operate under a different fiscal and customs system.
For tax purposes, goods moving between mainland Spain and the Canary Islands must pass through formal customs procedures, even though both territories belong to Spain.
2. IVA vs IGIC: The Canary Islands' Special Tax System
Mainland Spain operates under the standard Spanish VAT system (IVA).
The Canary Islands use a different system called IGIC (Impuesto General Indirecto Canario). Because the islands fall outside the EU VAT territory, movements of goods between the mainland and the Canary Islands are treated as export and import operations for tax purposes — even when you are simply bringing your own vehicle.
This means the car must go through a customs declaration process before it can be registered locally.
3. The DUA: The Required Customs Declaration
The key document in this process is the DUA (Documento Único Administrativo) — the official customs declaration used when goods enter the Canary Islands tax territory.
Before you can register your mainland-plated vehicle here, it must be processed through a DUA declaration with customs, handled through the VEXCAN system operated jointly by the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT) and the Canary Islands Tax Authority (ATC).
During this step, IGIC is calculated based on the customs value of the vehicle.
Because the customs procedure involves specialised documentation and electronic filing systems, most people use an authorised customs agent to handle the DUA. Their professional fees are one of the main reasons the process is not completely free.
4. What IGIC Rate Applies to Your Vehicle?
This is where many sources — and even some professionals — get it wrong. There is no single IGIC rate for vehicles. The rate depends entirely on the type of vehicle:
Vehicle typeIGIC rateTurismo up to 11 caballos fiscales9.5%Turismo over 11 caballos fiscales15%Furgoneta (commercial van, 2 seats, cargo area >50% of interior)7%Caravana, autocaravana, quad, todoterreno, trailer15%Electric vehicle0%Plug-in hybrid vehicle0%Vehicle for person with disability ≥65%3%Vehicle for person with disability 33–65%7%
Most expats bringing a standard family car from the mainland will fall into the 9.5% or 15% bracket, depending on their vehicle's fiscal horsepower (caballos fiscales) — which is not the same as engine horsepower. Owners of fully electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles pay 0% IGIC, making the process significantly cheaper for them.
If you qualify for a relocation exemption (see section 7), this tax can be eliminated entirely — but the DUA customs declaration must still be completed regardless.
Because the applicable rate depends on technical vehicle classifications that are not always straightforward, this is one of the main reasons people choose to use a professional service rather than navigate it alone.
5. Do You Have to Pay the CO₂ based Registration Tax Again?
No.
If your car is already registered in mainland Spain, you do not pay the Impuesto de Matriculación (CO₂ registration tax) again when bringing it to the Canary Islands. That tax is paid only once when a vehicle is first registered in Spain.
However, several administrative steps and costs still apply, including:
DUA customs declaration
IGIC (unless exempt)
Traffic authority (DGT) processing
Professional and administrative handling fees
6. ITV: Do You Need a New Inspection?
A common myth is that you must complete a special "import ITV" to register your mainland car in Tenerife.
In reality, if your vehicle is already registered in Spain, has a valid Spanish ficha técnica, and your ITV inspection is still current, a new ITV inspection is not normally required for the registration process. You would only need to visit an ITV station if your inspection has expired — just like any other vehicle in Spain.
7. When the Process Can Be Cheaper: Moving Your Residence
If you are transferring your habitual residence to the Canary Islands, you may qualify for an IGIC exemption. Typical requirements include:
You owned and used the vehicle for at least 6 months before moving
You were resident outside the Canary Islands for at least 185 days per calendar year
You bring the vehicle within 12 months of establishing residence in the Canary Islands
The vehicle cannot be sold or transferred for at least 12 months after registration
If these conditions are met, the IGIC cost can be eliminated entirely. The customs declaration and administrative registration steps, however, must still be completed correctly regardless.
8. Why Many Expats Use a Professional Service
Registering a mainland vehicle in Tenerife requires coordination between several authorities:
Customs (DUA / VEXCAN)
The Canary Islands Tax Agency (IGIC)
The Spanish Traffic Authority (DGT)
A missing document or incorrect declaration can delay the process or trigger unexpected taxes. Getting it right the first time saves both time and money.
